Danger Keep this appliance away from water. Do not use it near or over water contained in baths, washbasins, sinks etc. When you use the appliance in a bathroom, unplug it after use. The proximity of water presents a risk, even when the appliance is switched off. Warning This appliance is NOT a toy but a mains-operated hairstyler. The styling surfaces of the appliance become very hot. If the appliance is used on young children's hair, it must be operated by a responsible - EnglisH 7 - - adult. Older children must be instructed and supervised when they use the appliance. Keep the appliance out of the reach of young children. Check if the voltage indicated on the appliance corresponds to the local mains voltage before you connect the appliance. Check the condition of the mains cord regularly. Do not use the appliance if the plug, the mains cord or the appliance itself is damaged. If the mains cord is damaged, you must have it replaced by Philips, a service centre authorised by Philips or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard. This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. Always return the appliance to a service centre authorised by Philips for examination or repair. Repair by unqualified people could cause an extremely hazardous situation for the user. Caution For additional protection, we advise you to install a residual current device (RCD) in the electrical circuit that supplies the bathroom. This RCD must have a rated residual operating current not higher than 30mA. Ask your installer for advice. Keep the attachments clean and free of dust, dirt and styling products such as mousse, spray and gel. Never use the appliance in combination with styling products. The plates have a ceramic coating. This coating slowly wears away over time. This does not affect the performance of the appliance. The ceramic-coated parts of the attachments become hot during use. Prevent contact with the skin. Keep the mains cord away from the hot parts of the appliance. Only use the appliance on dry or damp hair. Always unplug the appliance after use. Wait until the appliance has cooled down before you store it. - - 8 - EnglisH Do not wind the mains cord round the appliance. Do not connect the handle to the mains without attaching an attachment first. Make sure the attachment is properly fixed to the handle before you put the plug in the wall socket. Do not use the appliance on artificial hair. Do not use the appliance for any other purpose than described in this manual. electromagnetic fields (eMF) This Philips appliance complies with all standards regarding electromagnetic fields (EMF). If handled properly and according to the instructions in this user manual, the appliance is safe to use based on scientific evidence available today. Preparing for use If the appliance is used on young children's hair, it must be operated by a responsible adult. Older children must be instructed and supervised when they use the appliance. Keep the appliance out of the reach of young children. Before you start styling, comb or brush the hair so that it is untangled and smooth. Connecting attachments 1 To connect the attachment, insert it into the handle. Make sure that the support points downwards (Fig. ). Turn the locking ring on the handle to the left until the bold arrow on the locking ring is in line with the arrow on the handle. The attachment is now securely fixed to the handle (Fig. 3). Follow this procedure for all attachments. To detach the attachments, turn the locking ring to the right and pull the attachment out of the handle. Unplug the appliance when you remove an attachment after or during styling. Avoid touching the metal and ceramic parts of the attachment, as they are hot. EnglisH using the appliance With the Girl Glam multi-styler you can create large rounded curls, ringlets, crimps, triangular curls and a straight, sleek look. 1 Connect the desired attachment to the handle (see chapter `Preparing for use'). Place the appliance on the support of the attachment and put the mains plug in the wall socket. , The power-on light goes on and the appliance starts to heat up. (Fig. ) When you use one of the curling attachments, always make sure you wind the end of the lock in the required direction. 5 How long you have to keep the styler in the hair depends on the thickness of the hair. In case of fine hair, 5 seconds is long enough for a good result. Leave the styler in the hair longer (max. 10 seconds) if the hair is thicker. large rounded curls 9 Start styling when the ready dot on the attachment changes colour (Fig. 5). 1 Connect the large curling attachment to the handle. Make sure that the support points downwards. Take a lock of hair. Press the lever to open the clip and place the lock between the barrel and the clip. Release the lever and slide the barrel to the end of the lock. Then wind the lock round the barrel (Fig. 6). Make sure you wind the end of the lock in the required direction. Open the clip after 5 to 10 seconds and remove the attachment from the hair. Let the curls cool down before you comb, brush or finger-comb the hair into its final style. You can comb the curls with your fingers to add volume. 10 EnglisH Ringlets 1 Connect the large curling attachment to the handle and slide the spiral onto the curling attachment. Take a lock of hair. Press the lever to open the clip and place the lock between the barrel and the clip. Release the lever and slide the barrel to the end of the lock. Then wind the lock round the barrel along the spiral (Fig. 7). Make sure you wind the end of the lock in the required direction. Open the clip after 5 to 10 seconds and remove the attachment from the hair. Let the ringlets cool down before you comb, brush or finger-comb the hair into its final style. triangular curls 1 Connect the triangle attachment to the handle. Make sure that the stand points downwards. Take a lock of hair. Press the lever to open the clip and place the lock between the barrel and the clip. Release the lever and slide the barrel to the end of the lock. Then wind the lock round the barrel (Fig. 8). Make sure you wind the end of the lock in the required direction. Open the clip after 5 to 10 seconds and remove the attachment from the hair. Let the triangular curls cool down before you comb, brush or finger-comb the hair into its final style. Crimps 1 Connect the crimping/straightening attachment with crimping plates to the handle (Fig. 9). Take a lock of hair (max. 5 to 6cm wide). Press the lever to open the attachment and place the lock between the crimping plates. Start crimping at the roots (Fig. 10). Keep the plates locked for 5 to 10 seconds. EnglisH 11 Press the lever to open the attachment and place a lower section of the same lock of hair between the plates. Make sure there is an overlap. Repeat this process until you have reached the end of the lock. 5 Let the crimps cool down. Do not brush or comb the crimps, as this wil ruin them. waves, curls and crimps disappear if your hair gets wet (for instance when you wash it). You can also use the straightening plates to make them disappear. sleek look 1 Open the crimping/straightening attachment. Remove the plates one by one by grabbing their cool tips and pulling them out of the attachment (Fig. 11). Turn the plates upside down and slide them back into the attachment (Fig. 1). Make sure that you insert the edges of the plates properly into the grooves. You have now turned the crimping attachment into a straightening attachment. Connect the attachment to the handle and follow the same procedure as for creating crimps. Another method to straighten the hair is to slide the straightening attachment slowly down the lock. Let the sleek hair cool down before you comb or brush it. If you have natural curls or waves, the straight result disappears if your hair gets wet (for instance when you wash it). Cleaning Never immerse the appliance in water or rinse it under the tap. 1 Remove the mains plug from the wall socket. EnglisH 1 Problem The appliance does not work at all. Solution Perhaps there is a power failure or the socket is not live. Check if the power supply works. If it does, plug in another appliance to check whether the socket is live. Perhaps you have connected the appliance to a voltage for which it is not suitable. Make sure that the voltage indicated on the appliance corresponds to the local mains voltage. Perhaps the mains cord of the appliance is damaged. If the mains cord is damaged, you must have it replaced by Philips, a service centre authorised by Philips or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard. The styling results are not what you expected. Perhaps you did not let the appliance heat up long enough. Let the appliance heat up until the ready dot has changed colour. Perhaps you wound too much hair round the barrel or put too much hair between the plates. When you use the curling attachments, do not make the locks too thick. The thinner the lock of hair, the tighter the curl will be. When you use the crimping/straightening attachment, make sure the locks are no wider than 5-6cm for a good result. Perhaps you did not leave the styling attachment in the hair long enough. Keep the styler in the hair for 5 to 10 seconds, depending on the thickness of the hair. 1 Girl Glam ! , , , , . - , , .
